I decided about 18 months ago it was time to buy a new quality stainless steel 3.2 litre saucepan. For most home cooks, 3. 2 litres (6.76 American pints) is the most used size. Being a chef I wanted a quality saucepan that would last as well as my old one, so I spent quite some time researching before I decided to buy this one.
My old 3.2 litre stainless steel saucepan was part of a set I bought back in 1986 whilst working in the US, and is still in use.
Robert Welch-The Company
Whilst my American readers may not be familiar with the name Robert Welch, their products can be found in over 100 countries. Starting from a small beginning in 1955 in England they have a growing global reputation because they pay attention to detail: from their design to the quality of the manufacturing.
Design
Robert Welch has a history of winning design awards for their products, not just because they are beautiful to the eye but because their function is equally award winning.
High grade 18/10 Stainless Steel
18/10 stainless steel is a high-end grade of stainless steel containing 18% chromium and 10% nickel. This composition offers superior mechanical properties with high heat and corrosion resistance but also comes at an increased price. The main use of 18/10 stainless steel is premium cookware and cutlery due to its corrosion and heat resistance.

Saucepan
The saucepan is 18 cm in diameter and 3.2 litres in capacity. It has a cool touch handle which is a very useful feature. All of the saucepans in the Campden range have a copper core that is sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel which allow for even heat distribution, eliminating any hotspots you find in a lesser saucepan. Campden saucepans are suitable for all cooking appliances (halogen, solid plate, gas, electric, ceramic and induction).

The Steamer Insert
I prefer a integral steamer for draining food rather than using a plastic or metal colander. It takes less room to store plus it easily gives you the option of steaming your food. I often find I have potatoes in the saucepan whilst steaming other vegetables in the insert which saves you from dirtying another saucepan. The steamer insert fits perfectly, as does the lid giving you great function as well as looking great.

Slotted Drainer /Skimmer
Another thing that attracted me to this particular saucepan set was that it came with a slotted drainer/skimmer, which is also made from 18/10 stainless steel and was designed specifically to work with the saucepan and steamer insert. The drainer has a rounded handle making comfortable to hold, whether your “fishing” for last few gnocchi or a poached egg!

Performance
Whether you want to slowly cook scrambled eggs or make a sauce you need a heavy duty quality saucepan that heats evenly and that is where the Campden 3.2 saucepan excels. I used the saucepan in my latest Youtube video to make a Béchamel sauce and as you can see from the screenshot, nothing is stuck to the bottom. This is not just a testimony to my cooking skills but also to the even heat distribution during the cooking process.
25 Year Guarantee
All Robert Welch Cookware come with a 25 year guarantee against manufacturing defects, which you’d expect in a premium saucepan.

Looking after your Investment
If you take the plunge, the saucepan set comes with care instructions to keep it looking pristine. The website also has good advice on cleaning either in the dishwasher or washing by hand. They even have a short video explaining Do’s and Don’ts.
Comes in a Gift Box
When I bought the Campden-Saucepan-Steamer-Set back in January 2023, I didn’t pay attention to the fact it came in a gift box, which might be useful if you are thinking of buying a gift for the cook in your life. Not only that but the set was very well packed, which is a sensible policy when we all know courier companies can be less than careful.
Conclusion
As I said at the top of this article, I spent a quite some time looking at what is available in both the UK and the US. And I didn’t find anything that matched the build quality or function of this set. I also used the saucepan and steamer for over a year to give an honest real world professional opinion and I’m still impressed.

Thanks for the review Kevin! The nicer sets of stainless always used to come with the fitted steamer basket which is a real plus. Haven’t bought saucepans in years, but this one looks wonderful.

After contacting them to make sure the pan has a milled bottom so I can use it on my Aga, I bought this! I absolutely love it. A nice weight, and the steamer basket will come in handy so I can double duty my veggies! Thanks for the recommendation; it is nice and heavy, and was a good price too.

I agree Noelle, having quality saucepans make cooking a lot easier. In investment that should last for years.

What a beautiful investment. You didn’t say what you paid for the set.
I have a nice set of pots and pans, but not with a steamer included.
I rarely steam things, but when I do, i use a flimsy steamer basket.
I am looking for a gift for my Mom. It’s her birthday as well as Mothers Day this month.
Thanks for the great idea. 1986, was a long time ago…

Hi Teri and thanks for stopping by.
I paid £116 for the set one year ago and currently the price has remained the same.
For American customers they charge $139.20 which I think is a bargain. Just visit the ask ask about delivery.
Yep my old 3.2 litre set I bought back in 1986 whilst in America from a department store it was part of a saucepan set. Who knew the saucepan would last 38 years and counting.

Yep but the saucepan needs to have a heavy sandwich bottom (like this one) and it is best to scramble the eggs on a medium heat rather than high.

I used a Visions tempered glass saucepan this morning. Melted butter on high, reduced to medium, and scraped them up with a silicone spatula. They were great.
